I think online media has completely changed the ways journalists now access and receive information. Thanks to social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter; press releases can be instantaneously shared with a wide audience, depending on the users followers. The popular site You Tube has not only resulted in launching pop star careers - It also provides a platform on which information - images, or a video from somebody's mobile phone can be shared, and then commented on- all in a global sphere. A wide audience can be reached in a matter of moments.
Journalists have to use and participate in these online medias so they can keep up. News stories can be discovered through Twitter thanks to a politicians or celebrities tweet. Trying to find a family member to interview in a crime report can be simplified through a Facebook search of a person's name or friends list.
There is such a wealth of information online that the modern journalists skill is found in their methods of online research and communication and their ability to sift through the depth of information available to us.
So, we can be informed instantly and communicate instantly. A news story can be emailed to a web designer so the 'front page' is no longer printed at the end of each day. But is updated but simply clicking the refresh button.
Just some thoughts!
